Talking to Loved Ones in Spirit

I recently spent a few weeks with an internationally well-known Psychic Medium who had her own television show for a number of years. During our visit, she spoke about the misconceptions people have about mediums on television and the realities of that genre of work. I want to share some of her wisdom with you. She asked me to consider the following:

Whether you are studying to become a medium, are a medium, or just enjoy receiving a mediumship reading, chances are high you have watched a few mediums demonstrating their skills on various programs. Some have mediums going up to random people on the street and sharing several very accurate messages, leaving the person amazed and emotional. Each piece of information given is shown as incredibly precise without them getting anything wrong. Others demonstrating in their homes or studio with the same amount of accuracy.

As a medium myself, this has often led me to believe that I needed more practice, training, and development to become “as good as” those famous personalities. In fact, on a few occasions, I considered giving up mediumship altogether because no matter how much effort I put into my work, I could never reach the level of perfection portrayed on those shows.

She went on to say that the truth is, as good as those mediums are, they are no different than any other hard-working, ethical medium who owns their own business but just isn’t on TV. Television programs are there to entertain and keep you hooked by creating that “wow factor.” Hours of production work was put in before and after each show. People approached on the street are pre-informed and have given consent for a reading. Sometimes this occurs hours before the reading takes place. Therefore, the spontaneity factor may not be accurate.

Additionally, every moment of the reading is closely reviewed and carefully edited to reflect the most accurate information and reactions of the people being read. A few hours of a reading would be edited down into a 30-minute show in which 10 minutes of it is commercials. Showing the very best content is more exciting, more enticing, and is, after all, what makes great television.

Her words rang true with me, as I have personally viewed a few unedited versions of popular mediumship shows where not everything they said was accurate. The client would say, ‘I don’t understand that,” or, “no, I can’t relate to that information,” but that information was not in the final edited version because those responses don’t get ratings up. It isn’t what makes great TV. Perfection is what people want to see, and so the producers make sure that is what they get.

I’ve been intrigued and lucky enough to have several readings with celebrity television mediums being a medium myself. Several times I was excited to be able to say, “yes, I understand that,” and, “Wow, that was amazing.” However, I have also had many moments where I said, “hmm, I am not sure who that is or what you mean,” regarding the information they were giving me. In fact, in some situations, I left the reading feeling disappointed and emotionally deflated because my personal experience didn’t match up with the medium’s accuracy as projected on TV. Speaking with her helped this make sense to me.

I have come to realize that each medium is human, and humans make mistakes. Whether you are famous or just trying to make a living in your town, this is true across the board. Yes, there are awful mediums out there who should not be practicing this field, perhaps even fakes. There are however, mediums out there just as good and even better as any famous medium. We should not judge ourselves and our abilities based on the shiny, edited, polished version of someone else’s ability projected on television. Not everything we see is reality.

A “typical” reading will have you saying no a few times, yes several times, and maybe a couple of times. Know that sometimes those no and maybe answers can turn into yes later after you think on the information a while or speak to a family member about it. A mediumship reading is like playing a game of charades. Spirit will impress things upon the medium, and it is up to them to figure out how to translate that into something the client will understand. They don’t always get that translation right, and neither do those “perfect” TV mediums.

I really appreciated this amazing woman’s perspective because it gave me back the confidence I needed to continue my work as a medium. She wanted to share this so good mediums stop comparing themselves to the “perfect” version portrayed in the media. Don’t base your insides on someone else’s outside. Always remember a lot of editing goes into the making of any show. Don’t throw in the towel and walk away from your gifts and calling. See through the “performance,” don’t feel inadequate or discouraged. You are here to reach people, help people, and bless people with your ability.

For any client who wants a reading, please give the person who is not on TV a chance. They can be just as good or even better. Most often, you can book an appointment with them much sooner and with less outrageous pricing. Also, no matter who it’s with, no reading is 100% accurate. Expect a good medium to be at least 80% accurate, factoring in the 20% human element. Again, remember you are human, and sometimes you won’t remember certain things until after the reading, turning the maybe or no into a yes.

For all developing mediums, I ask that you give yourself a break. Just like we learned to not compare ourselves to the polished, edited models on magazine covers, don’t compare yourself to the edited mediums on TV. Don’t compare yourself to the way any other medium looks or works. Celebrate your unique abilities, individuality, and quirks. That is what will make you the perfect person for every client that comes to you. Not all mediums are suitable for all people. We are blessed to do this work that shows life continues after death and that love never dies. Famous and non-famous mediums alike all want to heal their clients and bring about positive change. Your people are out there. Don’t give up; they need YOU.
