Why do some of us seem to have better intuition than others?

Perhaps you believe that you lack intuition all together or wonder how it even speaks. A few clients have even asked me to explain how they can discern between intuition and the mind.

Your mind is constantly giving you feedback and lets face it, never shuts up. Your mind also loves it’s own voice and will give you long logical answers to the questions you are asking. It will weigh up the pro’s and cons of what you are asking. Your intuition is different. It speaks to you through your senses which you experience in the body and it is fast as lightening. When you ask your intuition a question, the answer is often there before the sentence is even completed.

In order for you to begin to listen to your intuition you are going to have to get out of the logical thinking part of your brain and begin to pay attention to the signs and feelings you are receiving in your body. Your intuition can provide valuable feedback, and when you listen to it well, you will find that it is never wrong.

Here are a few tips to cultivate and use your intuition:

  • Practice addressing and listening to your intuition.
    • You probably already do this, just not at a sufficient level. When faced with multiple possibilities, give your intuition a chance to chime in. Start with little things. “Should I go on a date with Fred or stay at home?”
Ask yourself these types of questions as they come up in your life and notice the response you receive immediately. What are you feeling as you ask the question? What answer did you immediately hear?
  • Notice how your intuition communicates with you.
    • You may ask a question and then see something on TV that relates to the answer. It might be in the form of a verbal response where someone calls you and starts talking about what you were just wondering about. In many cases, you’ll get a feeling in your body that might take the form of a feeling in your stomach, chest, or head. It could reveal itself as a sense of calmness, knowing, or anxiety.
    • You already experience these types of feelings. When faced with something you fear, your intuition is speaking to you giving you warning signs to act. You already know how that feels. You also know when something feels “right.”. Practice understanding your senses and how they feel in the body. My guess is you just didn’t link it to intuition.
  • Follow your intuition blindly in trivial matters.
    • Show your intuition that you’re willing to listen. When faced with non-pressing matters, such as whether to have a cup of coffee or tea, just do what your intuition tells you. You might go for a joy ride and allow your intuition to choose all the turns. Pay attention to where you end up! Stand in front of a few elevators and allow your intuition to guide you to the door to stand in front of. See if it opens first.
  • Meditate.
    • Meditation is a great way to achieve mindfulness. It helps clear the mind and bring you to a state of receiving. This state is enough for you to notice subtle signs of how your intuition communicates with you. If meditation is not for you, then choose something you love doing and engross yourself in that. For me, it is painting. When I am sitting at a table and painting a picture, I go into a meditative state. Meditation doesn’t have to be formally sitting still for 30 minutes. You can do a walking meditation in nature where you are focusing on nature itself or gardening for that matter. Its all about taking your mind off your logical thought process to allow your intuition to speak up. Its all about learning to silence the chatter.
  • Spend time in a new environment.
    • Your thoughts and feelings become habits that are partially dependent on your surroundings. You tend to think and feel a certain way at home. The same goes for work or even driving to a certain destination. We tend to do things the same. Give your intuition room to maneuver by spending time someplace out of the ordinary for you. Time at the library, park, or coffee shop might open the lines of communication.
  • Do something that engages your mind at a low level.
    • Have you ever noticed that many of your best ideas come while taking a shower, driving down the highway, or mowing the grass? It’s because your mind is partially occupied. You have to pay attention to what you’re doing, but your mind isn’t so engaged that it can’t wander a bit and allow your intuition to speak.
  • Carry a ball in your hand when asking a question.
    • Your mind is like a two year old. Its needs entertaining. Throwing a ball between your hands while you are asking your intuition a question allows the mind to get out of the way.
  • Keep a journal of your results.
    • Keep a journal for a week and notice how your intuition provides helpful and accurate feedback? Notice the situations where the results are positive and those that are negative. You’ll be able to trust your intuition in more areas of your life over time. When you experience a negative outcome, analyze what was really going on at the time. Perhaps you thought it was your intuition but ended up getting into a debate around which way to turn, which is more your logical mind than your intuition. Notice where in the body you experience intuition and where in the body you experience your thoughts.
It’s important to understand that your intuition is not flawed. It’s your fears and misconceptions that get in the way. For example, you’ll never get a good vibe about spending time with someone new if you have social anxiety issues.
However, you already know a lot of things. And you already have a lot of life experience. The vast wisdom resulting from those two things is locked inside of you. Your intuition uses that information to guide you – if you’ll listen.
